AMMAN - The University of Jordan (UJ)University of Jordan (UJ)
on Thursday signed an agreement with the Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA)Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA)
to establish a UJUJ
branch in Aqaba. According to the agreement, signed by UJUJ
President Khalid Karaki and ASEZAASEZA
Chief Commissioner Hosni Abu Gheida, the authority will allocate 250 dunums of land for the university, which is expected to be operating in the next four years.
The university, which aims at contributing to the area's development, will open its doors to students for the 2009-2010 scholastic year with five faculties including business administration, IT, marine sciences, languages, and tourism and hospitality.
According to Khalid Karaki, these faculties were selected in response to market needs and in order to serve the port city with qualified graduates.
"Our goal is to have a distinguished university in terms of faculties to serve students in Jordan and neighbouring countries including Saudi Arabia and Palestine," Karaki told The Jordan Times, adding that the new university will offer specialisations not available at existing institutions of higher education.
However, according to Karaki, admission priority and scholarships will be given to area residents who contribute to the development of Aqaba and neighbouring governorates.
As part of the preparations for the new university, Karaki told The Jordan Times that UJUJ
, in cooperation with concerned parties, is currently preparing the Aqaba Marine Science Station to serve as the university's marine science college.
Regarding tuition fees, Karaki said the new branch will apply the same criteria set out by UJUJ
in Amman.
