Jordan: GAM to place emphasis on public transportation services |
|
AMMAN - A revamped and modern public transportation system is integral to the Greater Amman Municipality's (GAM)Greater Amman Municipality's (GAM)
Master Plan, Amman Mayor Omar Maani said on Tuesday. Inaugurating a workshop on public transportation services in cooperation with the World Bank (WB), Maani said yesterday the municipality has made the sector a priority in order to develop the capital into a 21st century city.
"We have benefited from the experience of other cities in advanced countries, which adopt multi-transport systems to address congestion," Maani said, noting that GAMGAM
has recently established a public transport department responsible for planning, licensing and operating the sector.
Maani stressed that one of the greatest challenges aside from upgrading public transport is encouraging the public to take advantage of the services.
Participants from Oman, Yemen and Jordan concerned with the sector are taking part in the three-day event to discuss public transport strategies and policies in addition to potential transportation routes, marketing services and financial planning.
Jonathan Walters, director of the Environment and Transport Department at the WB, said 125 World Bank experts specialised in the transport sector are working on setting up transport strategies and assisting local governments and the private sector to provide safe services.
WB adviser Sam Zimmerman said the bank has decided to fund public transport projects in order to alleviate the public's socio-economic burdens, adding that citizens' viewpoints must be taken into account when setting plans for the sector.
GAMGAM
official Ammar Gharaybeh said the municipality has been seeking the assistance of WB expertise in the transport sector, in order to identify main transport routes and conduct feasibility and environmental studies on various proposed transport projects.
According to Gharaybeh, the WB experts will stay for several days in Amman after the workshop is over in order to discuss the transport project GAMGAM
is implementing.
