First public library for children soon |
|
MUSCAT -- As part of the government's vision of creating a knowledgeable and well-balanced society, a public library for children, the first of its kind in Oman, would be set up soon, said Her Highness Sayyida Dr Muna Fahad Al Said yesterday.
"The new library will create a welcoming and stimulating environment accessible to all children -- Omani as well as expatriate -- from birth to 18 years. "Its inviting and conducive atmosphere will provide children a knowledge gateway and instil in them the importance of life-long learning and community engagement for personal, social and cultural development," she said.
This declaration is set to bring enormous advantages and opportunities to the youth of Oman -- now and in the future -- and will promote the Sultanate as a forward-looking Gulf country committed to education and innovation, she added.
"With Dr Samira Moosa, associate professor of Early Childhood Development at Sultan Qaboos UniversitySultan Qaboos University
, a part of the project, as chairperson of the new venture, I am more than confident that the library will set new standards in education both here in Oman and overseas." "By creating Oman's first children's public library we are investing in tomorrow, today. We welcome more supporters to join us in this important initiative and together we can help shape the next generation," Dr Muna said.
The new library will be situated adjacent to the Children's Museum and the Museum of Natural History on land generously allotted by His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, minister of heritage and culture.
Together these three seats of learning will aim at creating a new and exciting cultural quarter and add to Muscat's burgeoning reputation as a regional leader in the field of early childhood development.
Renowned library developers, VITETTA, have been appointed as the project consultants. The Philadelphia-based company is at the forefront of library design and planning and has developed similar projects in the US, Europe and South America. As part of the consultation process, the Library Board held a series of public consultations with Omani children and stakeholders to ensure that their needs and requirements are met through the design, layout and activities on offer.
The results of these events, in combination with the opinions of the children, played a major part in helping form the library layout and design.
The plans integrate Omani architecture, culture and heritage with contemporary designs and state-of-the-art learning and educational technology.
The new building will be organised in four distinct levels to serve the different learning stages of children.
Novel and imaginative use of light, space and glass will provide a welcoming and creative feel and promote participation in educational and recreational activities.
