The UAE's Minister of Environment and Water, Dr Rashid Ahmad bin Fahad, said the proposed law aims to streamline the water conservation strategy of the government so as to meet the future water demands in the country.

On per capita basis, the UAE is among the world's fattest water consumers, with the water demand mounting up persistently, thanks to the country's rapid development and population growth.

The proposed law is expected to come into effect next year and will boost the UAE's efforts to conserve water, Dr Rashid told Khaleej Times yesterday, on the sidelines of the ISO General Assembly's opening session here on Wednesday.

The minister said the details of the new law could not be revealed now as it's being studied by the Justice Department for approval.

Dr Rashid said that the unprecedented construction boom in the UAE and the huge investments pumped into the sector would not have been possible if the UAE had not embraced quality modern technologies.

He said the green buildings initiative of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has opened up doors for the introduction of new laws, standards and guidelines for sustainable buildings in the UAE.

The UAE, the minister stressed, is one of the first countries in the region to implement global quality standards in various sectors.
